freiheit.com transformed DBAG’s Investment Opportunities with the help of AI

freiheit.com built a software that identifies investment opportunites for DBAG

How it all started

There are about 4 million companies in Germany, over 90% of which are privately held, spanning across more than 20 different sectors.

So, how can you identify a promising company with a proven and scalable business model to invest in its future?

For almost 60 years the DBAG (Deutsche Beteiligungs AG) has been analyzing potential investment opportunities manually. This evolved into an excel sheet with 22,000 lines with nearly 500,000 data points.

While this approach did generate successful investment opportunities, the process was done manually and therefore was cumbersome and difficult to scale. As DBAG’s data needs grew it was time for a change. So they rethought this process in order to guarantee real-time data at any time.
DBAG is a publicly listed German investment company known for uncovering unique, off-market opportunities across all sectors in the DACH region, Italy, and neighboring countries.

freiheit.com is one success story identified by DBAG and is now one of the fastest-growing companies in DBAG’s portfolio since 2022. And since 2024 the DBAG is not only freiheit.com’s investor but also their client.
DBAG detected freiheit.com manually back then.

The solution

Together, they are now building a revolutionary software tool – DBAG Nexus. It’s designed to manage top-tier company data, including financial metrics, shareholders, and sector alignment.

Essentially, it acts like a digital assistant that continuously scans the market, identifying tailored investment opportunities and high-potential targets – all in one click. Fully automated, scalable and customizable.
It can automatically extract key facts about companies, assign them to sectors, and identify potential business opportunities using a proprietary scoring algorithm. It also offers features to identify high-potential targets like suggesting suitable contacts for an initial approach, tracking who is in the lead and what previous contacts were made.

It achieves this by leveraging a combination of hand-crafted algorithms and Large Language Models to analyze large amounts of unstructured corporate data from various sources, such as financial reports, the company’s own self-description or the shareholder structure.

DBAG Nexus is deployed in Microsoft Azure, leveraging OpenAI from a set of go-based backend microservices, all the while serving a react-based frontend for end users. The whole platform is deployed using a nix-based toolchain to keep a tight track of all moving parts in the dependency-tree.

This new software tool is making their processes more reliable, faster and scalable across DBAG’s entire investment platform.
